One Fine Day in Kansas City
Travel Date:
Monday, 3rd August 2015
Kansas City, explored! Another city that I have visited during the summer. Found this place special and I always be grateful to the people who gave me opportunities to experience this wonderful city.
My home for a night was the Southmoreland on the Plaza, a bed and breakfast inn. As guest, I described this place as homey, cozy and personalized hospitality. The moment I stepped in to the front door and greeted with a wonderful smile, I already felt it's a home away from home. The receptionist immediately offered me a water for a drink and showed me the restroom that I can use. It was too early for the check-in time when I arrived at the Inn so I decided to go for a walk in the nearby park. Around the Nelson Atkins Museum of Art & Kansas City Sculpture Park, I've discovered the sculptures of large shuttlecocks created by Claes Oldenburg and Coojse van Bruggen, and I could not help but took some photos. Another noticeable sculpture I found is the Henry Moore 'Sheep Piece'. There were other sculptures in the park and it is said that you can find the largest collection of monumental bronzes by Henry Moore in the United States.
Under the heat of the sun, I've seen group of kids bringing sketch pads with their art teacher. I kept on walking until I found the Cafe Trio where I had my late lunch. After I enjoyed the flat bread in the restaurant, I went back to the Inn in time for check-in. Together with other guests, the nice lady receptionist Natasha (I hope I got her name right) toured us around the house, from the living room, kitchen, dining area, beverage refilling station. She also introduced us to the owners of the Inn. There is also a special box like a treat box for all the guests who wants a snack or finger food during wee hours. You just drop a 50 cent coin and grab anything you want from the box. After the tour, she guided me towards my room called 'Kathryn Winstead'. We climbed to a very vintage wooden stairs going to my room which is on the second floor facing the front porch. It was a nice, clean and quite room. My room described as: "This sunny, cheerful room features a queen-sized iron bed with bright brass cannonballs and is decorated in vintage Americana befitting the sponsor of Kansas City's favorite steakburger. After a long day, luxuriate in the unique 32-inch deep soaking tub or enjoy a treetop view from your private deck.", according to the Inn's website. It was also surprising when I found a magazine with Manny Pacquiao as the cover in the room's magazine stand. I wondered, did they know that I am a Filipino?
After an hour spent in my room, I met my friends for dinner at Julian restaurant in Brookside Plaza. The restaurant was almost full when we arrived and were asked if had a reservation. Lucky, there was empty table for us. I could not recall the dish I ate but it was pork chop with creamy sauce and brocolli on the side. I had good food, nice night and good chat in the company of wonderful friends. My friend drove me back to the Inn and thanked her for the wonderful treat. Enjoyed the rest of the night reading, browsing the net, chatting with my family in my room. What a fine day in Kansas City!
